چکیده

Here 3D larynx models whose viscoelastic properties of the superficial tissues of the true vocal folds were altered in specific regions at the glottis producing different left-right fold asymmetries are analyzed. The idea is to initiate studies about the dynamic of larynges under possible pathological conditions. All simulations used a strategy based on the finite element method to solve a fluid-structure interaction (airflow in the larynx) with a contact-impact problem (glottal closure). The results show that glottal closure is directly influenced by the presence and location of a stiffer mass in the surface of one of the vocal folds. Changes in glottal signal F0 (up to +13.7Hz), open quotient (up to 0.5812), and relative jitter (up to 15.2381%) were observed and are discussed here.

Visualizing collagen network within human and rhesus monkey vocal folds using polarized light microscopy.

OBJECTIVES Collagen fiber content and orientation affect the viscoelastic properties of the vocal folds, determining oscillation characteristics during speech and other vocalization. The investigation and reconstruction of the collagen network in vocal folds remains a challenge, because the collagen network requires at least micron-scale resolution. In this study, we used polarized light micros...

Asymmetric and symmetric vocal fold oscillation in the excised squirrel monkey larynx

The larynges of nine squirrel monkeys were harvested, dissected, mounted on a tapered pseudotracheal tube, and phonated using heated and humidified air. The patterns of oscillation of the vocal folds were videotaped with stroboscopic illumination, and simultaneous measurements of airflow, subglottal pressure, and audio signal were obtained. The pressure wave and audio signal were subjected to s...

Viscoelastic measurements of vocal folds using the linear skin rheometer.

As the number of interventions for vocal fold scar grows and with the advancement of mathematical modeling, greater accuracy and precision in the measurement of vocal fold pliability will become essential. Although indirect pliability measures have been used successfully, direct measurement of tissue pliability is essential. Indirect measurement with parallel plate technology has limitations; i...

Adapted to Roar: Functional Morphology of Tiger and Lion Vocal Folds

Vocal production requires active control of the respiratory system, larynx and vocal tract. Vocal sounds in mammals are produced by flow-induced vocal fold oscillation, which requires vocal fold tissue that can sustain the mechanical stress during phonation. Our understanding of the relationship between morphology and vocal function of vocal folds is very limited. Here we tested the hypothesis ...

Effects of dehydration on the viscoelastic properties of vocal folds in large deformations.

Dehydration may alter vocal fold viscoelastic properties, thereby hampering phonation. The effects of water loss induced by an osmotic pressure potential on vocal fold tissue viscoelastic properties were investigated. Porcine vocal folds were dehydrated by immersion in a hypertonic solution, and quasi-static and low-frequency dynamic traction tests were performed for elongations of up to 50%. D...
